Where is the strongest demand? Accountants with up to 5 years experience. We have commercial clients wanting experienced Financial Accountants direct from the Big 4 and Business Analysts with blue-chip corporate experience. The demand is spilling over to the accounting profession where we have Big 4 clients wanting Chartered Accountants from smaller professional firms!
Engineering employment continues to be strong although easing off from the enormous demand in 2004. Civil Engineering, Structural, Electrical and Chemical are just some of the skills sought by employers. Those most in demand are graduates with 2 to 5 years work experience gained in Australia.

Marketing and HR remains the most competitively sought opportunities. Simply there are more quality candidates than there are positions. Earlier this year we recruited in Melbourne for a recent Public Relations / Marketing graduate and were absolutely swamped with outstanding applicants. Our client was in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose from a tremendous short-list.
More often aspiring marketers should look at sales opportunities that can genuinely lead to a career in marketing. At the moment, Northeast Quadrant has multiple positions with a blue-chip client who deals with Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Retail companies. They want marketing, research or sales professionals with FMCG or Retail experience coupled with strong analytical and presentation skills.
Demand for sales professionals is always steady and because of the wide range in candidate quality, a top class individual always stands out. However, employers typically look for sales people from within their own industry. Making a switch from the packaging industry to FMCG for example, is very difficult.
IT demand is finally growing! By no means anywhere near the boom times of 2000, the loss of people from the industry, fewer graduates and a real increase in IT jobs has improved employment opportunities. The key for new IT graduates is to gain some part-time career related work experience while at university. This will give you a head start in winning graduate employment.

When First Impressions Count
The process of landing the perfect job is very much about promoting your technical skill set and those vitally important interpersonal skills. It starts with the CV and Cover Letter but extends to interviews and how you interact with the interviewer. Did you know that by the time you reach the interview stage, the dominant factor in how the interviewer assesses you is non-verbal communication?

While we would love to help every candidate who applies to Northeast Quadrant we simply don’t have the resources to respond to everyone on an individual basis. However, building from the seminars and training courses developed and run by our staff, Northeast Quadrant has tailored a one day workshop for people who want to improve their chances of success in the job hunt process.
The First Impressions Count workshop is interactive with demonstrations, role plays and individual coaching and will cover
- How to write a winning cover letter and CV
- Interview tips, techniques and personal presentation
- Your personal career plan
Participants will be much better prepared for their future job seeking efforts.
However, let me be clear. The workshops are for people who want and need help. They are not a prerequisite for consideration by Northeast Quadrant nor will they give you “special inside running” for opportunities with Northeast Quadrant. The workshops are our way to offer help to people who need it.
The one day workshop (initially in Sydney) costs $75 (inclusive of GST). At this stage we are taking expressions of interest with no commitment required from participants. If you would like to register your interest for the First Impressions Count workshop please email Ida Shapievsky at i.shapievsky@northeastquadrant.com.au.

To view our current list of job opportunities go to www.northeastquadrant.com.au/jobs.asp. Remember that not all jobs are advertised. When a new job comes to us, the first action we take is to review candidates who have previously registered their CV with us. Often, a job is filled so quickly it may not make it to our own website!
